Each generation of smartphone ushers in improvements to the cameras on the backs of our handsets, and now they’re starting to rival what we can do with traditional point and shoot cameras. I’ve even seen some claim that our phones now compete with SLRs, so I felt it was time to take a look at one important aspect of photo and video performance: depth of field.

watched the tutorial you suggested and i believe that strengths my argument, seemingly the results are strikingly similar to the cannon 7d results in depth of field, strip the 7d down to single main lens and results would not vary much from the smaller sensor devices which with the addition of similar add on lenses of equal quality would produce simple marginal barely noticeable differences

dummy u didn't use aftermarket lenses which would have put the smartphones on equal ground

Thanks. No many video doing review on cellphone DoF. However, I heard that zooming can make DoF shallower. Is that also true for cellphone camera?

I'd be interested in an update comparing the iPhone 6 to a similarly priced camera.

You can't compare any smartphone camera to a dslr especially if you know how to use them

Bigger sensor does not always equal better DOF. For example, 7d vs 5d… 5d has bigger sensor, and 7d actually gets better DOF most of the time, it just isn't as sharp.

It's also about focal length, phone cameras usually have about 24-28mm full-frame equivalent focal length, whereas the 7d w/the 50mm has an 80mm equivalent focal length
