For the purpose of this tutorial, I will do most of the demonstrations on the PC version, but I will also cut to some mobile scenes to show you the difference between the 2 platforms. That being said, the functionality for basic usage is practically the same for all versions of the software across all platforms. To be begin, this video assumes that you have already installed the Discord app on your PC, MAC or mobile device. OK here we go… There are 4 vertical panels in Discord each displaying 4 different types of information. On the mobile version, the right most panel is not visible. We will cover that panel last. To access the left most panel on the mobile version, select the 3 horizontal bars icon as shown. The left most panel displays your servers if you have created them and servers that you have joined. If you are new to Discord, this panel will be empty except for the + icon and the Direct Messages icon at the top. We will cover the Direct Messages icon later. To JOIN or CREATE a server, simply select the + button. A popup then appears asking you to either CREATE or JOIN a server. We will only cover JOIN in this video as CREATE is more complicated and will be covered in another video. On the mobile version enter the URL and then press Join and on the PC/MAC version select Join a Server and then enter the URL and then press Join. If successful, you will now see the added server in the left hand panel. You can navigate to your joined and created servers simply by selecting them. The second panel from the left, is the text and voice display for the channels for the server you have selected. Each server has a certain number of text channels and voice channels. Notice as I select the different servers, that they do indeed have different text and voice channels. These are determined and created by the server admin. On the mobile version, you reveal this panel by again by selecting the 3 horizontal bars icon as shown. The top part of the channels panel, displays the text channels. To enter a text channel, simply press on it. The main panel then will display all the text chat for the selected text channel. The same applies for entering a voice channel. Select it and you are ready for voice chat with whoever is in that channel! It’s that simple! Of course to use voice chat, you will have to have a speaker and microphone installed. On PC/MAC, your gaming headphones and microphone are an excellent choice. On mobile you can use the built in microphone and speaker, but it is preferable to use earbuds while gaming. If using Discord while on console, simply place 1 or 2 earbuds in your ear and your gaming headphones over your earbuds..it works great! The main panel contains all the text chat for the selected text channel. If you have permission, you can simply write a message and it will appear in the channel. On the mobile version, the right most panel is not visible. That panel displays users that are currently online for the server that you are in and those that have previously joined the server and are offline. To access the right most panel on the mobile version, press the people icon. Here is a last tip for using the Discord app… To send a private message to a user in PC/MAC, simply right click on that user in the right most panel. Then select Message. In the Main panel, you will now see all the Direct Messages with that user. No one else can see these messages except you and that user. On the Mobile version, access the right most panel and click on the icon for the user you wish to PM. Then click on the top right icon and then the Messages icon on the lower right. And then send your message!
