How far can a smartphone effectively control the new GoPro Hero 3. This test is conducted at 50 yards LOS, 100 yards LOS, and 100 yards NLOS. I used an Apple iPhone 5 and a Samsung Galaxy S 3 running the GoPro App and connected via wifi.

Snow reflects wifi, you'll get somewhat less range when the snow melts.

The phones are interfering with one another, which is why you got a preview as soon as you put one away, and also why the iPhone dropped connection as soon as you touched the Android phone to it.

When testing, it's usually a good thing to understand the basic concepts behind what you're testing. The wifi should have been turned off on each phone when testing the other for an accurate comparison.

The temperature of the environment won't help connection. Since the air is a lot denser to a warmer environment

I just bought two Hero 3 Silvers, using one as a dash cam driving a semi over-the-road, the other to do still shots out the window. At $200 each, both of these things have been a nightmare. Neither one will maintain a connection or stay running without help, even with my Galaxy S3 within 1 foot. I notice the app you are running looks different than what I downloaded from the Google Play store. Is a better one available from GoPro's website?

What kind of cam did you use to record this video?
Also do you always have to have a wifi internet connection to use app?

So on the 3 black do I need any sort of cellular data or outside internet connectivity to work the Gopro app.
Only asking because the 4 silver has both wifi and Bluetooth and wondering if that's the plus.
A lot of my usage for the Gopro will be out of range from any coverage.
    Trying to decide which gopro
to get between the 3 black and 4 sliver. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

i thought that you had to have GoPro turned on before you can control it using the phone, because the camera has a wifi built-in and u need to connect to the camera's wifi on your phone..

SO, if you have an Android (I have a Galaxy S3) and the GoPro App loaded you don't need the GoPro WiFI remote.  It is included with the HERO 3+ Black but now with the new 4 model you have to pay $80 extra.  I'm assuming I can save $80 by using their app instead?

I had bought this for my friend for christmas, and he absolutely loves it. He can hook it up to an app on his phone. and it works really well, and has good quality.
