Many years ago I would always use server OSes rather than desktop OSes, but for stability, not performance.

I had the same problem with the Wi-Fi drivers you have to anybody a particular service that I don't know off the top of my head in the window services because Wi-Fi services are default to off for security reasons on a server

One of the reasons someone would pay a thousand dollars is for licensing purposes. IE a company who needs to put windows on a 100 are a 1000 computers.

Im running vista x64 highly customized OS.

I dont even have a user interface, its all running through only 2 things, i launch programs via task manager or CMD. There is no start menu, no gaming services, nothing. The only thing it can do is play games and access the internet. My idle RAM usage is around 560mb. For vista … Thats a fuckin god like.

it would have been interesting to see how win 10 vs server did with regards to file sharing, video streaming, or even something like Steam game streaming on a LAN….you know, server-like stuff.

The performance drop is because the server edition Windows favours background tasks, while the other version favours foreground tasks.

The single best way to boost OS performance is to make it as light running as possible with zero bloat, like with how amazing Windows XP runs on PC's from the 2010's.

Did Linus even change the processor scheduling from Background services to Programs? There are probably other things you need to do to strip Server down into a workstation.

To everyone: The answer to the question is "No, all versions of Windows within the same family (i.e. XP/2003, 7/2008, 8/2012, 10/2014) perform exactly the same unless the hardware is unsupported.

The hint is in the name – SERVER. It's not meant to play games on; the test is how it performs when you've got 500 users hanging off it all wanting to know why MS Office doesn't load.

I am interested in getting microsoft essential and i wanna know the down right basics of what to know about it money wise as i only wanna use it for home use and access outside of the home. I understand that yes ofc i have to buy it hehehe! but are there any fees should i be aware of other than just buying it outright from microsoft? are there yearly fees to be paid and do i have to pay some amount of money depending on how many cores I have? again thank you very much for your time you've put in reading mine.
