I have a question. I am a real newbie to digital art & drawing apps; Procreate is the only app I've used, and I've really learned about all the features over the past 6 months or so. Thing is, I'm primarily a watercolour artist, and I want to be able to create digital line art that I can then transfer onto my paper with a projector (seeing as you don't want to do lots of pencilling & erasing on watercolour paper, as it damages it.)

So in a digital app, I want to be able to do a lot of editing of lines, resizing elements, moving things around etc. until I have a composition I'm happy with. My pieces usually involve a lot of elements arranged in a collage-type style, so there's a lot of fiddling around until I find what works. Procreate doesn't seem great for this, as things get fuzzy if you keep rescaling them. I want the line art to still look sharp, as not only will I be drawing it onto paper, but I do commission work, so I want to send the outline to clients for their approval. I'd like to also be able to add some colour, to show roughly what the finished piece will look like.

Does anyone know what app would be good for this? I've heard of the 'smart objects' feature in Photoshop and I think I might want something like that, but I'd rather use a cheaper, stand-alone iPad app that I can use on the go, especially as I doubt I'll need all the other Photoshop features. Any suggestions from Brad or people who've tried a number of iPad apps?

The way I have always heard it, Drawing apps deal with vectors and Painting apps deal with pixels. Some deal with both but they usually are stronger in one or the other. Nobody describes Adobe Illustrator as a painting app, although it can do stuff with bitmap images. Affinity Photo =Painting Affinity Designer = Drawing. Procreate = Painting.

I would have to give Clip Studio Paint the number 1 spot. I still haven’t sprung for the subscription, but playing around with it has me trying to convince myself that maybe it makes sense. It doesn’t. Not for me. But the rest of the iOS apps just leave too much to be desired. They all bring something great to the table, but none of them have it all. Clip Studio Paint just seems to get much much closer to having it all.

clip studio paint was literally the single greatest deciding factor with which i bought an iPad pro for digital art – haven't regretted it for a single second. Absolutely outstanding.

procreate is pretty nifty too – I bought it, and someday soon, I'll actually take the tie to learning it thoroughly
